January 30, 2020; St. George’s Grenada: The blast of the canon at 7.30am on January 26th signaled the official start of the 2020 Republic Bank Spice Island Billfish Tournament (RBSIBT). In 2019 we saw a record breaking 74 boats participating in the tournament; this year recorded the second largest number of boats: 57, with 23 from Trinidad, and 15 from Grenada. The RBSIBT also welcomed the first participating boat from Jamaica.
Overall, 287 Anglers participated, among them 10 female and 7 junior anglers (including one female). Following the 3 days of keen competition “Magic Lady” from Trinidad topped the other boats to capture the 1st place prize, amassing 4,200 points from 11 Sailfish and 1 Blue Marlin releases. Among the other awardees were: Anisha Thomas, Boat “Maverick”, St. Lucia (Top Female Angler); Andrew Sabga Jr. “Zaaron”, Trinidad (Top Junior Angler); Francois Moutett “Magic Lady”, Trinidad (Top Angler); and Gary Clifford, “Yes Aye” (Top Grenada Angler).
Prior to the main event, a local tournament was held on January 24th among the various parishes. The overall prize was won by Curtis Allard of St. Andrew;
Republic Bank congratulates all the winners and participants, with special commendation to the RBSIBT Committee on a well-executed event. The Bank remains committed to game fishing conservation and to promoting Grenada as a great sport tourism destination.
