February 02, 2022; St. George’s, Grenada: Grenada boasts a successful hosting of the 52nd annual Republic Bank Spice Island Billfish Tournament. The event which ran from January 25-29th attracted 40 boats and 197 anglers. The participating boats sailed from: Barbados – 8; Martinique – 4; St. Lucia – 1; Trinidad and Tobago – 15; USA – 1 and Grenada – 11.
After 4 days of keen competition, the top performers were as follows:-
- Top Release Angler: Jonathan Webster (Boat: Eclipse), Barbados
- Top Female Angler: Diana Webster (Boat: Eclipse), Barbados
- Top Junior Angler: Andrew Sabga Jr., (Boat: Zaaron), Trinidad & Tobago
- Top Grenada Boat: “Yes Aye”, skippered by Gary Clifford
- Winning Boat (Overall): Eclipse (Barbados)
In the Boat Pool category, both 1st and 2nd places were won by Grenadian boats: “Jes Lewis” (skippered by Patrick Andrew) and “Irish Cream II”, owned and skippered by Clinton Bailey.
The awards ceremony was attended by members of Republic Bank’s executive management and management teams. Mrs. Naomi De Allie, Managing Director, presented the coveted award to the winning boat.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, chairman of the Spice Island Billfish Tournament Committee, Nicholas George, was in high praise for the participants, the organizing committee, the Customs & Excise Department, and all other contributors, on the success of the event, given the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 climate in many of the territories, Grenada included.
