St. George’s – July 17, 2017: The sweet sounds of steel pan music will fill the air at the National Athletics Stadium come Panorama night, August 12, 2017 and the Republic Bank Angel Harps is already in full preparation mode, in a bid to capture the Panorama title, which they’ve won fourteen (14) times! But before panorama, at the Children’s Carnival frolic on August 5th, the Angel Harps Juniors will also be out to capture the junior championship title, a title they’ve held previously - on nine (9) occasions.
Republic Bank has been the proud sponsor of this prestigious steel orchestra for the past thirty five (35) of its fifty two (52) year existence. The Bank made its annual presentation to band manager, Mr. Brian Sylvester on Friday, July 14th at its head office on Maurice Bishop Highway, Grand Anse.
On presenting the cheque valued at EC$31,000.00 (Thirty One Thousand Dollars), Ms. Aesia Worme, Manager – Head Office, commended the band on its accomplishments over the years and wished them well for the upcoming carnival season.
According to Band Manager, Brian Sylvester, pan tuning is almost complete, and rehearsals are in full swing. For carnival 2017, the junior band will perform "Power" by Mandela Linkz and arranged by Mr. Jevon Andrews; while the seniors will perform Dash’s “No Company”, as arranged by Mr. James Clarkson.
Apart from the annual carnival competitions, Republic Bank Angel Harps is actively engaged in activities to teach the steel pan to young persons, thus providing alternatives that would make a positive social impact. At the same time, ten (10) junior members of the band are preparing to sit Music Theory exams, as part of this program of youth empowerment.
Republic Bank Angel Harps is the oldest known steel band in Grenada. We extend best wishes for success at Carnival 2017.
