St. George’s, Grenada; April 08, 2022: The inaugural Republic Bank Inter-Secondary Schools Athletic Championship came off successfully on April 07th at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium, with 17 secondary schools competing for top honours in the Boys’ and Girls’ divisions.
Secondary schools students were not disappointed; they turned out in hundreds to cheer on their school after a 3-year absence of Grenada’s number one track and field event – INTERCOL. For some, it was their first “INTERCOL” experience. Support from adults was just as overwhelming, as the stands were filled with scores of onlookers.
The partnership between Republic Bank and the main organizers, the Grenada Association of Principals of Secondary Schools (GAPPS) and the Grenada Secondary School Games Association to host the games provided a much-needed intervention, after the 3-year interruption.
Highlights of the day included the torch relay borne by current IAAF World Champion in the javelin throw and Republic Bank Brand Ambassador, Anderson Peters. Peters trudged through pouring rain to run from the Bank’s Melville Street Branch to the Stadium, passing the torch to an athlete, stamping the Bank’s mark as title sponsor for the event, for the first time.
At the end of the special one day event, the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School was declared winner in the Boys’ division for another consecutive year, while the St. David’s Catholic Secondary School dethroned St. Joseph’s Convent – Grenville as the new Girls’ champs.
Republic Bank extends heartiest congratulations to the winners, and thanks all the participants, stakeholders and volunteers who worked hard in ensuring the games were successful!
We remain committed to youth development, through Sports.
